Overview

The participants will be introduced to the operating systems concepts. MVS components, their capabilities, functioning and their inter-relationships will be discussed. This is an entry-level classroom course.

Objective

Participants will get to know about -

  • The operating system concepts in general.

  • The various components of MVS and how they work together.

  • How MVS manages storage.

  • How MVS manages job processing.

  • How MVS manages data.

Duration

One (01) day: (09.30AM till 17.30AM) 

Participant's Profile

Computer professionals who are new to mainframes are the primary audience for this course. This is an entry level course meant for Application Programmers on mainframes.

Prerequisite

Data processing concepts. Large systems’ overview.

Follow-on session

Job Control Language (JCL) session is recommended after this course.

Day – 1

  • Introduction to MVS – Evolution of MVS, Operating system concepts, MVS functions

  • Storage Management – Physical storage, Virtual storage, Dynamic Address Translation, Paging, Swapping, Data Spaces

  • Work Management – Job Entry Subsystem, JES processing, Locating programs, Transaction processing

  • Data Management – Master and User Catalogs, Aliases, Volumes and Datasets
