that you need to stay informed, so projects stay on track and within budget.
Benefits

instantly see the impact of a schedule or resource change on your overall
project schedule. Quickly master the project management process with the new
step-by-step, interactive Project Guide, which helps you set up a new
project, manage tasks and resources, track schedules, and report project
information. Promote best project and process management practices by
developing custom Project Guides.
- Stay informed. Gain a better understanding of your projects with improved
grouping and information displays within Network Diagram and usage views.
Display three timescales in Gantt Chart and usage views, and even print
column and row totals.
- Work with familiar, easy-to-use tools. As you work, new smart tags alert
you to alternative scheduling choices when you make changes to your project
plans, so you remain in control of the schedule. Easily convert existing
task lists in Microsoft Excel and Outlook into Microsoft Project Plans.
| What's
New |
| Project
Guide |
.gif) |
Users
can quickly and easily create and manage project plans with the new Project
Guide. Step-by-step interactive instructions walk users through the key
areas of their projects — tasks, resources, tracking and reporting — so
they can be productive immediately. In addition, the Project Guide can be
customized to effectively promote an organization's best practices from
within the application.
|
| Wizards |
.gif) |
New
wizards have been added to reduce the time and complexity of setting up
projects. As users generate a new project plan, Microsoft Project helps them
select custom fields and templates, facilitates collaboration, and allows
supporting documentation to be attached to the project or tasks. A new
wizard simplifies the setup process for project calendars, changing working
time. Users can customize tracking views to track projects the way they like
— by percentage of work completed, total and remaining work, or specific
hours per day or week.
|
| Smart
tags |
.gif) |
Smart
tag indicators give users feedback when they make certain changes to their
project plans, especially those that may affect scheduling. For example,
when a resource is added to a task, a smart tag will ask for clarification
and offer alternative scheduling calculations that may be more appropriate.
Smart tags enable users to be in control of their schedule.
|
| Microsoft
Visio integration |
.gif) |
Users
can use Visio to import dates and tasks from Microsoft Project to create
high-level timelines and Gantt Charts.
|
| Multiple
baselines |
.gif) |
Now
users can better track the progress of their projects, monitor the variances
between project estimates and actual figures, and maintain historical
records for better project planning in the future. Microsoft Project allows
users to save and store full baseline data up to 11 times over the course of
any project.
|
| Three-tiered
timescales |
.gif) |
A
third level for timescale labels has been added to Gantt Chart and other
graph and Usage views. For example, users can now display months, weeks and
days for a project.
|
| Customizable
Project Guide |

The
customizable Project Guide allows users to effectively promote their
organization's best practices in processes or project management from within
the application. Developers can access the Microsoft Project Object Model to
modify the Project Guide as needed.
|
| Support
for industry standards |

Who should use Microsoft Project Standard?
Answer:
Microsoft Project Standard is designed for business managers, and is the natural
product for current users of Microsoft Project as well as for those who are new
to the project management category. Microsoft has included new features,
including the Project Guide, to make Microsoft Project even easier to use and
help users who have never used Microsoft Project and have had little or no
project management training.
Question:
What's new in Microsoft Project Standard version 2002?
Answer:
Microsoft Project Standard users benefit from the following features, which help
users intuitively manage and schedule projects:
• Project Guide. Users can become productive immediately thanks to
step-by-step interactive instructions that walk them through the key areas of
their projects: tasks, resources, tracking and reporting. In addition, the
Project Guide can be customized to support an organization's best practices from
within the application.

easier than ever to switch between Excel and Microsoft Project.
• Multiple baselines. With the ability to save and store up to 11 baselines,
users can better track the progress of their projects, monitor the variances

Question:
What is the difference between Microsoft Project Standard and Microsoft Project
Professional?
Answer:
Microsoft Project Standard is the successor to Microsoft Project 2000. With
enhanced help and more intuitive features, Microsoft Project Standard provides
the core project management tools that help project managers efficiently plan
and manage projects from their personal computers.
Microsoft Project Professional provides all of the core project management tools
in Microsoft Project Standard. In addition, Microsoft Project Professional is
used with Microsoft Project Server 2002 and Microsoft Project Server Client
Access License(s) (CALs) for workgroup collaboration and enterprise project
management capabilities.
Question:
What happened to Microsoft Project Central?
Answer:
Microsoft Project Central Server, which was included with Microsoft Project
2000, has been replaced by Microsoft Project Server 2002, now a separate server
product. Microsoft Project Server 2002 still supports all the project workgroup
collaboration functions that were included in Microsoft Project Central, such as
timesheets, status reports, and project views. In addition, the collaboration
features of Microsoft Project Server 2002 have been enhanced by integrating
SharePoint™ Team Services from Microsoft (included with Microsoft Project
Server 2002). With SharePoint™ Team Services, organizations can centrally
store project-related documents and issues. Microsoft Project Server enables
enterprise project management when used with Microsoft Project Professional.
Question:
Can files created and saved with Microsoft Project Standard 2002 be used in the
previous versions of Microsoft Project?
Answer:
Files created with Microsoft Project Standard 2002 can be used with Microsoft
Project 2000 and vice versa. Files created with the Microsoft Project Standard
2002 can be used with Microsoft Project 98, but only if you choose to save
Microsoft Project Standard 2002 files in the Microsoft Project 98 file format.
For versions prior to Microsoft Project 98, Microsoft Project 2002 can read the
MPX file format. Please note that files exported to the new XML-based file
format in Microsoft Project 2002 can be opened only in Microsoft Project 2002.
